3 Tips for Painting Wood Projects Like a Pro

Every great project starts with a little know-how.

Whether you are painting your very first wood project or your five hundredth, these tips will help you get cleaner lines, richer color, and a finish you are proud to display.

Tip 1: Wipe Off the Soot First

Before you pick up a single brush, take a damp paper towel or a baby wipe and gently wipe down your wood blank. Laser-cut wood often has a layer of soot or residue on the surface, and painting over it will affect how your colors look. A quick wipe makes a huge difference — trust us on this one.

Tip 2: Start with a Good Base Coat

Always start with a solid base coat before adding any detail work. Two thin coats of white or a light neutral will seal the wood and give your colors something to pop against. Skip this step and your colors will look dull and uneven.

Tip 3: Seal It When You Are Done (Maybe)

Here is the real rule on sealer — it depends on where your project is going to live.

• Indoor projects: You actually do not need a sealer unless you want to change the finish. Want to go from flat to semi-gloss, or tone down a shiny paint to matte? That is when a sealer comes in handy. Otherwise, skip it and save yourself a step.
• Outdoor projects: This is where sealing is non-negotiable. You will want multiple coats of a marine-grade sealer to protect your work from the elements. Do not cut corners here — the weather will win every time.
